THE REPORT OF THE CHIEF CONSTABLE OF EDINBURGH ON THE STATE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT IN EDINBURGH IN 1974.
Abstract
THE CITY OF EDINBURGH POLICE IS SCHEDULED TO BE CONSOLIDATED WITH A NUMBER OF OTHER AREA POLICE FORCES INTO THE NEWLY CONSTITUTED LOTHIAN AND BORDERS POLICE FORCE ON MAY 16, 1975. THIS REPORT WILL, THEREFORE, BE THE LAST ISSUED BY THE EDINBURGH POLICE. AN INCREASE IN CRIME OF 14.96 PERCENT WAS REPORTED, ATTRIBUTED TO AN INCREASE IN HOUSEBREAKINGS AND SHOPLIFTING. THE POLICE FORCE, DESPITE INTENSE EFFORTS, HAS BEEN UNABLE TO RECRUIT ENOUGH PERSONNEL TO MEET ITS MANNING REQUIREMENTS, AND IS 282 REGULAR OFFICERS SHORT OF ITS AUTHORIZED STRENGTH. THE REPORT PROVIDES A GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANIZATION AND OPERATIONS OF THE EDINBURGH POLICE. THE ACTIVITIES OF EACH SECTION AND DEPARTMENT ARE DESCRIBED IN DETAIL. THE COST OF PROVIDING POLICING IN EDINBURGH IS GIVEN AS ABOUT $11 MILLION (5,859,911 POUNDS STERLING).
