This chapter provides an overview of how the application of effect size (ES) metrics can be applied to police selection and treatment work.
Abstract
The chapter is intended for use by clinicians who do not have advanced training and/or experience with effect size (ES) metrics. The chapter is divided into two sections. The first section is an overview of the general merits of ESs and whether they should be added to null hypothesis statistical significance testing (NHSTs). The authors note that there are many different types of effect sizes and that a researcher's choice of an ES depends on the outcomes, research design, and analyses used. The second section of this chapter illustrates several common analytic scenarios in the police personality assessment literature that the authors believe could benefit from the inclusion of ES metrics. Several examples of the use of ES metrics are described in detail. Figures, tables, and references
