Abstract
This book explores the nature of organizations and how they are affected by the management of events. The book is intended for use by not only students in the field of organizational studies, but by managers as well, who are interested in the concept of organizational effectiveness. The book contains 14 chapters divided into 4 sections: 1) Complexity Theory and Organizational Design: A Structural Model of Organizations; 2) Challenges to Individual and Organizational Performance Effectiveness; 3) Designing a Framework for Organizational Effectiveness; and 4) Summary and Conclusions. The six chapters of the first section discuss complexity theory as a tool to aid in the understanding of organizational performance management in effective organizations, the structural makeup of the complete organization, and several different forms of organizations. The three chapters of the second section examine performance effectiveness and threats, risks, and vulnerabilities; self-organization from the ground up; and the emergence and management of events. The three chapters of the third section discuss a framework for organizational effectiveness at three different levels: the organization level, people and performance, and at the individual level. The two chapters in the final section examine self-organization and beyond; and open issues and new directions for the application of complexity theory to organizations and organizational research.
