Two police forces in Britain initiated citizen contact patrol programs in an effort to reduce citizen fear of crime.
Abstract
This paper presents the results of a quasi-experimental evaluation of the impact of these two programs. The results show no evidence that the program achieved its major goal of directly reducing citizen fear of crime. There was evidence, however, that the program achieved its secondary goal of improving some aspects of quality of life in the program areas. Significant improvements were noted in respondents' involvement with neighbors in home protection, in satisfaction with the police, and in contact with the police. The results also showed significant improvements in at least one of the program areas in satisfaction with the area, sense of community, and informal control of crime. 6 tables and 22 references (Author abstract modified)
