As part of the employer-driven model and toolkit developed by the National Institute of Justice, this report provides guidance on using labor market information (LMI) to target high-growth occupations for potential employment opportunities for justice-involved individuals.
Abstract
Given the vast amount of LMI available, job seekers will need assistance as they navigate through the career exploration process. This will require employment practitioners to be familiar with LMI resources and to know how to interpret the data. The most comprehensive source of LMI is Career One Stop, a Web site sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor. This Web site provides detailed information on employment growth and wage by occupation and location. In addition, the occupational profiles found on the Web site indicate the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for specific occupations, and links related to education and training is provided. Regional labor market trends are shown on LMI Web sites for the States. Another information source needed for employment practitioners working with persons with a criminal history is whether such persons can work in a particular occupation. Web sites with this information are profiled in this report. Also, the Labor Market Information Worksheet can be used to identify occupations with expected job growth. Other suggestions for employment practitioners in obtaining LMI are to develop working relationships with local LMI specialists; use LMI to target Second Chance Act training initiatives; verify LMI with local business leaders; identify federally funded projects with hiring guidelines for low-income individuals and minorities; and identify funding for veterans.
