This manual presents the seven modules that make up a comprehensive training curriculum designed to improve the response of probation and parole professionals to the needs of crime victims through services incorporated into offender case management.
Abstract
The training curriculum was developed through the Offender Supervision and Victim Restitution Project funded by the Office for Victims of Crime of the Department of Justice. An overall objective of the project is to develop ways to keep crime victims informed regarding their case, not just through disposition, but until the offender's release from community supervision. Therefore, two main components of the victim service program proposed in the training curriculum are victim notification and restitution collection. The training curriculum emphasizes the benefits of addressing victims' needs and concerns and aims to make probation and parole officers aware of the importance of their role in the victim's life and how their response affects the victim's attitude toward community corrections. Individual modules focus on the mission, goals, and objectives of the Offender Supervision and Victim Restitution Project; program design, development, and evaluation; assessment of crime's impact on victims; incorporating victim services into probation and parole responsibilities; managing the collection of victim restitution; addressing crime victim concerns regarding effective offender supervision; and legal issues of concern to victims and probation and parole professionals.
