This videotape presents the opinions and experiences of adolescent males and females regarding abusive relationships, dating violence, interpersonal relationships, and violence prevention.
Abstract
The youths are part of a group that was led by a social worker and that held group discussions, dialogues, and role plays depicting abusive relationships among adolescents. The social worker summarizes the group’s goal of producing a show on abusive dating relationships and notes that the first step in preparing the show was for the youths to understand themselves and their own experiences. The youths discuss and act out different types of controlling behavior, expressions of jealousy, lack of respect for another person’s privacy, emotional and verbal abuse, and physical abuse. They examine the reasons that victims sometimes remain in abusive relationships. They also discuss the influence of sex role stereotypes, the experience of living in homes in which their parents were involved in domestic assault, and the relationship of alcohol to violence. Other areas explored include victim support and peer influences on behavior.
