ROLE OF ALARM SYSTEMS IN REDUCING BURGLARY, ROBBERY, AND RELATED CRIMES AND DEVELOPMENT OF COST-EFFECTIVE ALARM SYSTEMS WITH MINIMUM FALSE ALARM AND FAILURE RATES.
Abstract
IN THE COURSE OF THIS STUDY IT WAS DETERMINED THAT ALARM SYSTEMS CAN AND SHOULD PLAY A KEY ROLE IN THE REDUCTION OF BURGLARY AND ROBBERY SINCE THE MAJORITY OF THESE THREATS ARE MADE BY NON-SOPHISTICATED INDIVIDUALS WHO LACK TECHNICAL EXPERTISE AND GENERALLY COMMIT CRIMES OF OPPORTUNITY. THE MERE PRESENCE OF AN ALARM SYSTEM MAY DETER SUCH INDIVIDUALS. DATA WERE OBTAINED AND ANALYZED PERTAINING TO THE NATURE OF THE THREAT, COMMERCIAL SECURITY EQUIPMENT, AND THE USER. RESULTS OF THE DATA ANALYSIS LED TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF SECURITY SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS FOR VARIOUS CLASSES OF USERS. A LARGE NUMBER OF ALARM MANUFACTURERS WERE THEN SURVEYED, AND MANY PRODUCTS COVERING A DIVERSE QUALITY SPECTRUM WERE REVIEWED AND EVALUATED WITH RESPECTS TO PERFORMANCE, RELIABILITY, DESIGN, AND COST. SEVERAL SECURITY SYSTEMS WERE FORMULATED BY CHOOSING EQUIPMENT FROM COST-EFFECTIVE RANKING LISTS. THE RECOMMENDED SYSTEMS ARE PRESENTED ALONG WITH ITEMIZED COST TABLES AND FLOOR PLANS REPRESENTATIVE OF USER GROUPS AND THEIR RESIDENCES, APARTMENTS, AND SMALL BUSINESSES. THESE SYSTEMS WERE DESIGNED BY APPLYING EXISTING EQUIPMENT. HYBRID SYSTEMS COMPOSED OF BOTH EXISTING EQUIPMENT AND EQUIPMENT YET TO BE DEVELOPED WERE ALSO PROPOSED. IN ADDITION, RECOMMENDATIONS WERE MADE FOR A FAST RESPONSE SECURITY SYSTEM AND FOR FUTURE RESEARCH EFFORTS. THIS DOCUMENT WILL BE OF PRACTICAL VALUE TO PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS IN EVALUATING AND PLANNING THEIR RESIDENTIAL AND BUSINESS SECURITY SYSTEMS.
