AN ANALYSIS WHICH TRACES THE ORIGINS OF THE DISTORTED IMAGE OF THE CHICANO IN THE CONTEXT OF CRIME AND CRIMINALITY, AND SUGGESTS THE NEED FOR NEW ANALYTICAL PARADIGMS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF CHICANO CRIMINALITY.
Abstract
CRIMINOLOGICAL LITERATURE ON THE CHICANO IS EXAMINED, FOCUSING ON THE PERIOD BETWEEN 1848, WHEN THE WAR BETWEEN MEXICO AND THE UNITED STATES WAS ENDED, AND 1943. THE SOCIAL SITUATION WHICH EXISTED IN 1848 WHEN MEXICO WAS COMPELLED TO CEDE ONE-HALF OF HER TERRITORY TO THE UNITED STATES IS FIRST DESCRIBED. THE RISE OF RACIAL STEREOTYPES, THE USE OF CHICANOS AS A SOURCE OF CHEAP LABOR, AND THE RISE OF THE 'BANDIDO' IMAGE OF CHICANOS ARE TRACED AS WELL. THE VARIOUS CRIMINOLOGICAL THEORIES WHICH HAVE BEEN APPLIED TO CHICANO BEHAVIOR ARE DESCRIBED. AMONG THESE ARE THE BIOLOGICAL DETERMINISM THEORY AND SOCIAL DARWINISM. SEVERAL CRITICISMS OF THESE THEORIES ARE PRESENTED. THE AUTHOR ARGUES THAT NEW PARADIGMS FOR RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS THAT DEAL DIRECTLY WITH THE PROBLEMS OF RACISM, EXPLOITATION, AND THE INJUSTICES THAT CONFRONT THE CHICANO COMMUNITY ARE VITALLY NEEDED.
