RESULTS OF A MANAGEMENT QUESTIONNAIRE SURVEY OF CITIES 10,000 OR OVER IN POPULATION.
Abstract
THE DATA PRESENTED IN THIS REPORT ARE INTENDED TO AID IN THE MANAGEMENT OF MUNICIPAL POLICE, FIRE, AND REFUSE COLLECTION AND DISPOSAL DEPARTMENTS. EMPLOYEES OF THESE DEPARTMENTS ARE AMONG THE MOST VISIBLE AND MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL MUNICIPAL WORKERS. FROM JANUARY 1, 1973, TO JANUARY 1, 1974, AVERAGE ENTRANCE AND MAXIMUM SALARIES FOR POLICEMEN AND FIREFIGHTERS IN CITIES REPORTING INCREASED AT A HIGHER RATE THAN AT ANY OTHER TIME OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS. FOR BOTH POLICE AND FIRE, WESTERN CITIES PAY THE HIGHEST ENTRANCE AND MAXIMUM SALARIES, AND SOUTHERN CITIES PAY THE LOWEST. SUBURBAN CITIES PAY HIGHER ENTRANCE AND MAXIMUM SALARIES TO POLICEMEN, FIREFIGHTERS, AND REFUSE COLLECTORS THAN DO OTHER CITY TYPES. IN THE CITIES REPORTING, THE AVERAGE HOURS POLICEMEN WORK PER WEEK IS 40, FOR FIREMEN IT IS 54 HOURS. REFUSE COLLECTORS WORK AN AVERAGE OF 40 HOURS PER WEEK. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
