The second part of a survey conducted by the Corrections Compendium journal focused on correctional facility construction projects in the United States and Canada.
Abstract
Forty-four correctional systems in the United States reported that formal efforts were in varying stages to construct more than 573 individual projects during fiscal year 2002 to 2003. These projects included new residential facilities and major expansions and renovations of existing facilities, as well as support, medical, and administrative units. The projects included 24 new facilities, 32 expansion projects, 50 plans for renovating current facilities, 3 segregation units, and 4 major security upgrades. Twenty-three correctional systems reported no planned projects for the period. Five systems in Canada responded to the survey and reported 11 projects that would add an estimated 1,522 new beds to their facilities. Overall, the projects planned more than 23,000 new beds, including more than 5,600 in the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Total planned expenditures in the 44 reporting systems were $1.9 billion. Only five systems indicated specific problems with site selection, compared to 12 systems in 1999. Tables
