This book examines the causes and treatment of wife battering and child abuse and describes public school education programs for prevention.
Abstract
A review of causal factors in wife abuse encompasses religious teachings, historical and legal antecedents, cultural norms, socialization, psychological factors, and characteristics of battering husbands. Reasons why women remain in battering relationships are also identified, as are the effects of wife abuse on children in the families where it occurs. A comprehensive model of therapy for families with abused wives considers assessment issues, treatment goals and modes, and followup. Following an historical perspective of child abuse, a review of current factors in child abuse considers sociological and psychological influences. Portrayals of child abuse treatment focus on the abusing parents as well as the child victims. The discussion of public school education programs pertaining to child abuse and wife battering considers the rationale for such programs and curriculum topics. Appendixes contain treatment and education instruments. Chapter footnotes.
