A SUMMARY OF THE INITIAL STAGES OF THIS PROJECT, WHICH WAS DESIGNED TO TEST THE EFFECTIVENESS AND PROPERTIES OF POLICE HANDGUN AMMUNITION IN ORDER TO FORMULATE AMMUNITION GUIDELINES FOR POLICE.
Abstract
THE RESEARCH CONTRACTOR WAS TO IDENTIFY THE PERFORMANCE ATTRIBUTES OF HANDGUN AMMUNITION RELATIVE TO THE KNOWN NEEDS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES AND TO EVALUATE SUCH SPECIFIC AMMUNITION CHARACTERISTICS AS RELATIVE STOPPING POWER, THE RICOCHET CHARACTERISTICS, AND THE RELATIVE ABILITIES TO PENETRATE MATERIALS AND TISSUES. THE RESEARCH CONTRACT WAS GIVEN TO THE U.S. ARMY BALLISTIC RESEARCH LABORATORY IN MARYLAND. SEVERAL OF THE RESEARCH AND TESTING METHODS USED IN THIS PROGRAM ARE DESCRIBED.
