THE HISTORY OF FEDERAL INTERVENTION IN STATE CRIMINAL CASES THROUGH EQUITABLE REMEDIES IS TRACED. LIMITATIONS ON THE APPLICATION OF THESE REMEDIES BY FEDERAL COURTS, INCLUDING PRINCIPLES OF FEDERALISM, ABSTENTION, AND THE FEDERAL ANTI-INJUNCTION ACT, ARE ANALYZED IN DETAIL.
