Abstract
DEMOGRAPHIC DATA ON THE SEX AND PRIOR CRIMINAL RECORD OF THE CONVICTED DEFENDANT TOGETHER WITH INFORMATION CONCERNING TYPE OF COUNSEL, NUMBER OF PRESENTENCE INVESTIGATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS WITH RESPECT TO PROBATION ARE INCLUDED. PART I OF THE REPORT DESCRIBES THE CHARACTERISTICS OF PERSONS CHARGED WITH FEDERAL CRIMINAL VIOLATIONS IN THE 89 UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURTS WHILE PART II PROVIDES MUCH OF THE SAME INFORMATION FOR DEFENDANTS DISPOSED OF IN THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. BECAUSE THE FEDERAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM HAS SEVERAL SENTENCING PROCEDURES, VARIOUS METHODS OF CLASSIFYING AND MEASURING THE STATISTICS ON DEFENDANTS DISPOSED OF HAVE BEEN PROVIDED IN PART III. A SERIES OF APPENDIX TABLES HAS BEEN INCLUDED PROVIDING HISTORICAL SUMMARIES ON THE DISPOSITION OF DEFENDANTS CHARGED WITH CERTAIN MAJOR OFFENSES. AUTHOR ABSTRACT
