Abstract
PART I OFFERS A BRIEF ANALYSIS OF THE STATISTICAL TABLES DESCRIBING THE DEFENDANTS DISPOSED OF IN THE 89 UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURTS AND IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. ALSO INCLUDED IS AN EXPLANATION OF THE VARIOUS SENTENCING PROCEDURES, STATISTICAL MEASUREMENTS AND METHOD OF COUNTING DEFENDANTS AS USED IN THIS FEDERAL OFFENDERS REPORT. A CHART WHICH ILLUSTRATES THE VARIOUS SENTENCING ALTERNATIVES AVAILABLE TO THE COURTS COMPLEMENTS THE DISCUSSION OF SENTENCE PROCEDURES. THE TABLES IN PART II DESCRIBE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF PERSONS CHARGED WITH FEDERAL CRIMINAL VIOLATIONS IN THE 89 UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURTS WHILE PART III PROVIDES MUCH OF THE SAME INFORMATION FOR DEFENDANTS DISPOSED OF IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. THE FEDERAL OFFENDER PROFILE, INTRODUCED IN THE 1969 FEDERAL OFFENDERS REPORT, SHOWS BY DISTRICT THE RELEVANT DATA ON DEFENDANTS DISPOSED OF IN THE FEDERAL DISTRICT COURTS IN FISCAL YEAR 1970.
