Florida State University has implemented a First Offenders Program as an educational alternative for students cited for their first underage drinking offense.
Abstract
The three-hour program utilizes a "knowledge-attitudes- behavior model" that emphasizes abstinence and/or responsible decision-making concerning drinking. In the orientation phase, the instructor introduces himself and the students briefly share their experiences. An atmosphere of openness and genuineness is established. The major portion of the program consists of the administration of the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST), a video, the development of a problem drinker profile by participants working in small groups, an "alcohol think tank" activity, role play, a dorm party scenario, and a problem drinker scenario. In the closure portion of the program, the facilitator provides appropriate feedback concerning results of the MAST and introduces the concepts of abstinence and controlled drinking. At the end of the session, students evaluate the course on a number of dimensions using a 5-point Likert scale. The recidivism rate for underage drinking on campus has dropped from 4.5 percent to 0.2 percent since inception of the First Offenders Program. 3 tables and 14 references
