This article describes a systematic procedure for examining an explosion scene to obtain trace evidence and submitting it to chemical analysis to identify the incendiary substance.
Abstract
It emphasizes that the optimal selection of the trace carrier is crucial for the success of the subsequent identification procedures. Preparation of the sample is outlined in terms of extracting the trace substances and isolating them for chromatographic analysis. Seven different cases in which this forensic procedure succeeded in identifying the type of incendiary device used to precipitate an explosion are cited. The nature of the site, the evidence collected, and the results of the analysis are described for each. Tables and charts are also provided.
