THIS COLOR VIDEOCASSETTE, AIMED AT FIRST- AND SECOND-YEAR FORENSIC STUDENTS, SHOWS THE TOOLS USED IN AUTOPSIES AND THEN DEMONSTRATES THE VARIOUS WAYS IN WHICH AN AUTOPSY CAN BE PERFORMED.
Abstract
A VARIETY OF MEDICAL EQUIPMENT USED IN SUCH PROCEDURES ARE DISPLAYED (SUCH AS PLASTIC SYRINGES FOR DRAWING BLOOD SAMPLES AND CHISELS FOR OPENING THE SKULL). THE AUTOPSY OF A MALE HISPANIC FOUND DEAD ON THE STREET IS USED TO EXPLORE THE VARIOUS APPROACHES TO AN AUTOPSY AND TO SHOW THE TYPES OF THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN DETERMINING CAUSE OF DEATH. PROCEDURES FOR CONDUCTING THE EXTERNAL EXAMINATION ARE DEMONSTRATED. MENTION IS MADE OF THE RELATIVE ADVANTAGES OF THREE MAJOR METHODS OF MAKING THE PRIMARY INCISION. REMOVAL OF THE ORGANS CAN BE DONE SEPARATELY, IN ONE STEP, OR IN MODIFIED COMBINATION OF THESE TWO OPTIONS, DEPENDING UPON THE INDIVIDUAL CASE. USES OF VARIOUS TYPES OF LABORATORY TESTS, ESPECIALLY USEFUL IN SUSPECTED DRUG-RELATED DEATHS, ARE NOTED. SEE NCJ 52811-52815, 52771-52776, 52782-52786, AND 53061. (KCP)
