NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS WAS IMPLEMENTED WITH NUCLEAR REACTOR AND SPECTROMETER TO EXAMINE THE ELEMENTAL FINGERPRINTS OF PAPERS AND INKS.
Abstract
PRELIMINARY STUDIES SHOWED THAT WHILE A NUMBER OF ELEMENTS COULD BE MEASURED IN PAPER BY NAA, THESE ELEMENTS COMPLETELY INTERFERED WITH THE MEASUREMENT OF ELEMENTS IN INK PRINTED ON PAPER. STUDY OF 120 PAPERS FROM 40 DIFFERENT BATCHES OF PAPER SHOWED THAT THE USE OF NAA FOR MEANINGFUL COMPARISON OF TWO OR MORE SAMPLES OF PAPER IS FEASIBLE, AND THAT THE METHOD COULD BE BROUGHT TO AN ADVANCE STAGE OF FORENSIC IMPLEMENTATION WITH A LARGER DATA BASE.
