This article reviews the state-of-the-art of forensic medicine in India today; it also contains a historical overview and lists the major laboratories in the country.
Abstract
Although India was a pioneer in the science of fingerprints as applied to crime investigation, current applications of forensic medicine and the technical capabilities of India's forensic laboratories are inadequate to meet the needs of a country its size. During the last two decades, there has been an ongoing effort to expand forensic science laboratories and allied institutions, particularly through Federal funding allocated to State police forces for that purpose. The medicolegal status of criminal investigation in India is summarized, as are both undergraduate and graduate training programs for forensic scientists, and the accomplishments of former and contemporaries of Indian stalwarts in the field. Listings are provided of forensic science organizations, laboratories, important journals, current and old books on forensic medicine, and active departments in major teaching centers in India.
