Abstract
Costs, training, hours of work, equipment needed, and vehicles required are all covered. How canines can be used and how to select and acquire appropriate dogs are discussed as well as how to select handlers. The amount of training involved on both the handler's and the dog's part is presented. Hours or shift appropriate for a canine unit is suggested to the peak hours of criminal activity, and it is suggested that the dog live with the handler to expedite the bond between them and to ease the hours involved in getting ready for a shift. Types of records and documentation to keep and types of housing and kennels required are also presented. Basic rules of dog care and handling are included in the article.
