Annotation

Thirty-two years after Independence, the Senegalese gendarmerie continues to be "a force that protects rather than hits." It continues to maintain a spirit of cooperation with the French gendarmerie organization from which it was developed.

The article reviews the step-by-step development of the Senegalese gendarmerie since its beginning in 1963 when it replaced the French gendarmerie.
