THIS ARTICLE REPORTS ON A RESEARCH PROJECT ON THE IMAGE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN THE FRENCH PRESS WHICH ANALYZED CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE RELATED STORIES APPEARING IN 23 NEWSPAPERS PUBLISHED IN FRANCE.
Abstract
THE PUBLICATIONS INVOLVED IN THIS STUDY INCLUDED EIGHT WEEKLY NEWSPAPERS, EIGHT PARISIAN DAILY NEWSPAPERS, AND SEVEN PROVINCIAL DAILY NEWSPAPERS. TWO FORMS OF QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS WERE USED - CALCULATION OF THE STANDARD DEVIATION OF CERTAIN TOPICS AND A FACTORIAL ANALYSIS. THIS YEAR-LONG RESEARCH EFFORT REVEALED THAT CRIMINAL JUSTICE WAS ACCORDED A RATHER LOW LEVEL OF IMPORTANCE IN RELATION TO OTHER SUBJECTS. A TYPOLOGY ALSO EMERGED OF FOUR TYPES OF IMAGES OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE CORRESPONDING TO THE POLITICAL LEANINGS (EXTREME LEFT, RIGHT, EXTREME RIGHT) OF THE VARIOUS PUBLICATIONS. RESEARCHERS CONCLUDED THAT THERE IS NOT ONE, BUT SEVERAL, IMAGES OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM REFLECTED IN THE FRENCH PRESS, AND THAT THESE VARIOUS IMAGES DEPEND ENTIRELY ON THE POLITICS OF THE NEWSPAPER CARRYING THE STORY. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT A QUANTITATIVE CONTENT ANALYSIS OF THE STUDY DATA BE UNDERTAKEN TO EXPLORE THE THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THESE IMAGES, USING A NUMERICAL SCORING SYSTEM. --IN FRENCH. SUMMARY IN ITALIAN
