Abstract
An introduction lists the characteristics of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and gives guidelines for using the rest of the book. Chapters on making the decision to leave or stay with the abusive partner cover the social and political aspects of abuse, new and traditional values in marriage and the family, feelings about breaking up a family, and conducting an anlysis of one's own needs. Also covered are factors to consider in making the decision, and steps to take in preparing to leave permanently. Three chapters cover methods of getting professional help and sources of help. A discussion of sexism concludes with the recommendation that help should be sought from female professionals if possible. Emergency help from doctors, police, and presecutors; the use of lawyers and types of legal issues that must be faced; and the use of counselors are examined. Chapters on self-help explain how to be one's own counselor, ways to overcome fear, ending social isolation, and steps to take during the first week after leaving the partner. Protection of self and children, obtaining welfare and housing, employment and financial issues, sexuality and relationships with men, and long-term planning are also covered. Checklists and self-help activities are included, as are annotated reading lists for each chapter.
