SHORT REPORTS ON THREE STUDIES MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN OF YOUTHFUL FEMALE OFFENDERS.
Abstract
THE FIRST STUDY IS A COLLECTION OF OFFICIAL STATISTICS ABOUT PROCEEDINGS AGAINST GIRLS OF THIS AGE GROUP, AND ABOUT THE USE OF CUSTODY BEFORE OR AFTER SENTENCE. SOME COMPARISONS ARE MADE WITH MALE OFFENDERS OF SIMILAR AGES. THE SECOND REPORT EXAMINES THE RECONVICTION RATES OF A GROUP OF GIRLS RELEASED FROM BORSTAL AND A GROUP OF GIRLS PUT ON PROBATION BY COURTS OF ASSIZE OR QUARTER SESSIONS. THE THIRD REPORT EXAMINES, ON THE BASIS OF INFORMATION PROVIDED BY AFTER-CARE ASSOCIATES, THE PROBLEMS AND DIFFICULTIES OF THE SAME GROUP OF GIRLS AFTER THEIR RELEASE FROM BORSTAL, AND DISCUSSES SOME POSSIBLE WAYS OF ALLEVIATING THEM. DATA TABLES REFERRED TO IN THE THREE REPORTS ARE INCLUDED IN THE APPENDIX. SIX CASE STUDIES ALSO APPEAR. A LIST OF REFERENCES IS PROVIDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
