THIS TABLE ATTEMPTS TO PREDICT FUTURE CRIMINALLY RELEVANT BEHAVIOR OF CHILDREN UPON ENTRANCE AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BY RATING FIVE SOCIAL FACTORS.
Abstract
THE FACTORS INCLUDED IN THIS PREDICTION TABLE ARE DISCIPLINE OF BOY BY FATHER, SUPERVISION OF BOY BY MOTHER, AFFECTION OF FATHER FOR BOY, AFFECTION OF MOTHER FOR BOY, AND COHESIVENESS OF FAMILY. THIS ARTICLE BRIEFLY CONSIDERS THE RESEARCH PHILOSOPHY BEHIND THE GLUECK PREDICTION TABLE AND THEN DISCUSSES THE VALUE OF THE EVIDENCE THAT HAS BEEN PRESENTED TO PROVE THE VALIDITY OF THIS TABLE, NAMELY TWO PROSPECTIVE VALIDATION STUDIES, ONE UNDERTAKEN IN NEW YORK CITY AND ONE IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. THE AUTHOR POINTS OUT THAT THESE TWO STUDIES RESULTED IN TABLES DIFFERENT FROM THE ONES THEY SOUGHT TO VALIDATE, AND SUGGESTS THAT, FOR COMPARATIVE PURPOSES, IT WOULD BE ADVISABLE TO COME TO AN AGREEMENT AS TO WHICH TABLE TO CALL THE GLUECK SOCIAL PREDICTION TABLE - THE ORIGINAL FIVE-FACTOR TABLE OR THE FINAL THREE-FACTOR TABLE (SUPERVISION OF BOY BY MOTHER, DISCIPLINE OF BOY BY MOTHER, COHESIVENESS OF FAMILY) OF THE NEW YORK CITY AND DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA STUDIES, OR ANY OTHER TABLE.
