Security for personal computers used in business and for mainframe systems accessible via dial-up telephone lines are addressed and suggested good security practices given.
          Abstract
For personal computers, security considerations include equipment protection from theft and damage; protection of data from improper access or alteration via hardware, software, and procedural methods; protection of personal computer applications from one another and from outside systems; and protection of the organization from legal consequences of personal computer misuse. Dial-up systems must balance low cost and easy accessibility against security and performance considerations. Techniques exist for identifying individual terminals, authenticating users, and isolating the mainframe via call-back procedures (manual and automated). Encyrption can be used (link-to-link, session-level, or application-level) as a powerful tool for securing data over communication lines. (Publisher abstract)
