THIS REPORT OFFERS GUIDELINES FOR EXAMINING THE CAREER STRUCTURE EXISTING WITHIN A POLICY AGENCY AND FOR DEVELOPING A CAREER PATH MODEL.
Abstract
THE GRANTEE CARRIED OUT ITS RESEARCH IN THE ST. LOUIS POLICE DEPARTMENT WHERE PERSONNEL RECORDS WERE EXAMINED, OFFICERS INTERVIEWED, AND QUESTIONNAIRES ADMINISTERED. AIR COLLECTED INFORMATION ON PERSONNEL FLOW, CAREER FIELD, CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS, AND FUTURE POLICE ROLES. WHILE MANY OF THE SUGGESTIONS RELATE PARTICULARLY TO THE ST. LOUIS POLICE DEPARTMENT, THESE GUIDELINES WERE DESIGNED FOR BROAD APPLICABILITY. OTHER POLICE AGENCIES WILL BE ABLE TO UTILIZE THEM IN EXAMINING THEIR OWN CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS AND DESIGNING A CAREER PATH SYSTEM SUITABLE TO THEIR OWN NEEDS AND SITUATION.
