Two mothers in Montgomery County, Maryland, have initiated a gun turn-in program in an effort to get unwanted guns off the streets and out of the hands of criminals and children, and to raise public awareness about the accessibility and proliferation of guns in this society.
Abstract
The guns and ammunition that people turn in as a result of this type of public campaign are melted down and taken out of circulation. As a direct result of this gun turn-in program, local and State police have announced they will no longer sell confiscated weapons, will implement a continuous turn-in program for county residents, and will remove outdated guns from their own offices to be melted down. This document contains articles about the gun turn-in program, gun violence statistics, and suggestions for starting similar programs in other cities.
