THE 'FILM-LIFT' TECHNIQUE DESCRIBED HEREIN IS A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE TO THE COMMON PARAFIN TEST METHOD OF ANALYZING GUNSHOT RESIDUES, ESPECIALLY AS A PREPARATORY METHOD FOR NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS.
Abstract
THE FILM-LIFT PREPARATION CONSISTS OF HIGHLY PURIFIED CELLULOSE ACETATE, ACETONE, AND A PLASTICIZER (PURIFIED COCONUT OIL WAS FOUND TO BE EFFECTIVE). THIS PREPARATION HARDENS IN ABOUT FOUR MINUTES AND CAN THEN BE PEELED OFF. THE ADVANTAGES OF THIS TECHNIQUE CONSIST OF EASE OF APPLICATION, AND THE ABSENCE OF BARIUM, LEAD, COPPER, GOLD AND ANTIMONY IN THE 'FILM' (THUS MAKING IT SUITABLE FOR NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS.
