Abstract
Some general principles for parents to follow are provided for each of the following age groups: preschool, kindergarten through grade three, grades four through nine, and high school. The booklet then provides information and guidance to parents on how to prepare their children to avoid or deal with specific threats to their health and safety. A section on conflict resolution and violence prevention addresses the range of behaviors that constitute violence, the role of discipline in controlling violence, how to talk to children about violence, and what parents can do if their child is a bully. A section on substance abuse suggests what parents can tell their children about why it is important for them not to smoke, drink alcohol, or use other drugs. The importance of talking to one's children about drugs and facts parents should know about drug use are also addressed. A section on keeping children safe from injuries focuses on ways to protect children from injuries while bicycling; using skates and skateboards; playing on school playgrounds; gun safety; home safety; water safety; poisoning prevention; and guarding against threats to safety in the bedroom and in the kitchen. A section on nutrition and exercise provides information on U.S. dietary guidelines, tips for healthy eating, keys to a balanced diet, how much physical activity children need, and safety tips for engaging in physical activity. Other topics briefly addressed are how to help children succeed in school and respect and care for the planet (conservation). Glossary of terms and references for each of the topic areas
