For over 100 years, Her Majesty's Inspectors of Constabulary (HMI) have had the responsibility to examine and improve the efficiency and standards of the Police Service in England and Wales.
Abstract
The role of HMI has not been widely understood because much of its output has been kept confidential. There is a Chief HMI who visits police forces, coordinates inspectors, and advises on the national level. There are 7 other inspectors who inspect 42 police forces annually. A major change in 1990 was the publication of HMI's police reports, in response to growing public and parliamentary interest in police efficiency. For the future, a statement of values and principles is being prepared to further acquaint the public with HMI. Unlike the dinosaur and the dodo, HMI is evolving rather than disappearing to meet the challenges of the 1990s.
