This report contains statistical descriptions of all persons sentenced to correctional institutions administered by the Hong Kong Correctional Services Department in 1997.
Abstract
Each inmate was sentenced to serve under one of four correctional program types--prison, drug addiction treatment center, training center, and detention center. Of 16,149 admissions in 1997, 13,742 were sentenced to prison, 1,916 to drug addiction treatment centers, 242 to training centers, and 249 to detention centers. The first section of the report overviews demographic, socioeconomic, and criminal characteristics of sentenced persons. The second section summarizes key statistics on sentenced persons according to correctional program, while the third section contains detailed statistics on drug addicts. The fourth section presents selected comparative statistics for 1996 and 1997. Each section is preceded by a summary of key points and includes charts to show historical trends in inmate receptions by sex, age, major offense group, and correctional program between 1982 and 1997. 38 tables and 5 charts
