COLLECTION OF ARTICLES BY PROFESSIONALS IN PENOLOGY OFFERING A TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY FOR INDIVIDUALS WORKING WITH IMPRISONED ADULT OFFENDERS.
Abstract
THE FIRST ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE RECURRING ISSUE OF PUNISHMENT VERSUS TREATMENT AS A CORRECTIONAL APPROACH. COMMENTS ARE MADE ON PSYCHIATRIC PROCEDURES USED IN SEEKING TO UNDERSTAND THE OFFENDER BEFORE PLANNING HIS TREATMENT. AN ACCOUNT OF OBSERVATIONS OF THE ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS PROGRAM IS PRESENTED AS EXAMPLE OF THE USE OF FRIENDLY ACCEPTANCE AS THERAPY. A DISCUSSION OF HOW PRISON ADMINISTRATORS MAY REALIZE AND COUNTERACT ANY ERRORS IN THEIR METHODS IS FOLLOWED BY COMMENTS ON THE NEED FOR THE PENAL ADMINISTRATION TO BECOME THE SERVANT OF TREATMENT. TWO EXAMPLES OF THE ADMINISTRATION OF PENAL INSTITUTIONS ARE OFFERED, THE FIRST DETAILING ONE OF THE MOST ADVANCED INSTITUTIONAL AGENCIES FOR THE TREATMENT OF NARCOTICS OFFENDERS AND THE SECOND DESCRIBING WHAT HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED IN A SPECIAL INSTITUTION FOR ELDERLY INMATES.
