This training manual describes hypnotic trance induction techniques and discusses their investigative and forensic uses in law enforcement and legal practice.
Abstract
Following examples of the use of hypnosis in both civil and criminal cases, detailed instructions for hypnotizing a subject are presented, including preinduction, induction, and deepening techniques. Rules and precautions to be kept in mind when hypnotizing are delineated, and 11 steps to be followed by the hypno-investigator outline procedures from the initial interview and consent releases through the trance induction and trance conclusion. Methodologies for using hypnosis in conjunction with a polygraph examination are set forth, as are uses of hypnosis to subvert polygraph testing procedures. The use of hypnosis in the courtroom is discussed with attention to its credibility, its use with expert witnesses, and State laws governing its use. Hypnotic crime cases provide illustrations of the use of hypnosis in the investigation of various crimes, including rape, murder, burglary, and robbery. Supplemental materials, glossary, and list of 19 recommended books.
