In September 1984, the Michigan State Police tested American cars being offered for police use by the three major manufacturers.
Abstract
During 3 sessions, a total of 15 police package cars were evaluated and rated in terms of vehicle dynamics, acceleration and top speed, and braking ability. The cars were all from the 1985 model year and were tested at the Chrysler Proving Grounds in Chelsea, Mich., and at the Michigan International Speedway near Brooklyn. The vehicle dynamics testing simulated the conditions under which high-speed pursuit driving takes place. During the acceleration and top speed testing each vehicle was accelerated from a standing stop to 100 miles per hour during 4 acceleration sequences. Ten braking tests were also used. The vehicles were also assessed for fuel economy. Five data tables present the test results.
