The author analyzed data concerning the efficacy of drug courts in recidivism and drug abuse reduction.
Abstract
Drawing upon prior research concerning the efficacy of drug courts in large metropolitan areas, the author wanted to expand that research, which had been somewhat inconclusive, to drug court programs employed by small-town or medium-sized city jurisdictions. The author provided background on the development of the drug court movement and related it to the policy goals of therapeutic corrections communities. A short literature review is provided. The author also discusses the implementation of North Carolina’s state court drug treatment courts which include six active adult programs. The author studied four of the six which operate in small towns or medium-sized cities. The author hypothesized that small and medium-sized cities provided clients with greater coordination of treatment and more intensive monitoring of client progress than did drug court programs in large metropolitan areas. The data collected from the North Carolina programs generally supported the author’s hypothesis. 3 tables, 22 tables
