This study is a content analysis of photographs in 22 introductory criminology and criminal justice textbooks published between 1988 and 1991.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the extent to which women have been given a visual presence and to determine whether texts provide a socially constructed image of gender commensurate with the various roles women play in criminology and the criminal justice system. Analysis of 1,373 photographs depicting 4,503 individuals revealed that women are rendered invisible and that images of women reflect the androcentric nature of criminology and criminal justice. This work analyzes photographs using three levels of visual portrayal: (1) the depiction of individuals; (2) the social composition of photographs; and (3) the placement of photographs within substantive areas.
