Research data for the 1973-1989 period indicate that the death sentencing rate for female offenders in the United States is quite low.
Abstract
Total death sentences numbered 43 in 1973, went up to 305 in 1975, ranged between 145 and 295 from 1976 to 1985, reached 310 in 1986 and 299 in 1987, and were estimated at 300 for 1988 and 150 for the first half of 1989. The percentage of females in these totals fluctuated from a low of 0.7 percent in 1974 and 1977 to a high of 2.7 percent in 1984. Statistical data are presented on female offenders' name, race, State, date of crime, date of sentence, and current status as of July 1989.
