Abstract
PROGRAMS DESCRIBED INCLUDE A SHORT-TERM, MINIMUM SECURITY PRISON, WORK RELEASE, USE OF FINES RATHER THAN INCARCERATION, AND PRISON EQUIPMENT FOR WORK AND STUDY PROGRAMS. TRENDS IN EUROPEAN CORRECTIONS ARE COMPARED WITH THOSE IN THE UNITED STATES.
