This manual instructs personnel in the Illinois community mental health/developmental disabilities system (CMHDDS) on the nature of the State's criminal justice system and its impact on them.
The manual is intended to assist CMHDDS professionals to respond more effectively and efficiently to information and treatment requests from the criminal justice system, assist their clients in dealing with the criminal justice system, and ensure a more efficacious use of the CMHDDS by criminal justice personnel. An overview of the Illinois criminal justice system covers apprehension and arrest, charging, the structure of the State court system, pretrial proceedings, determinations of competency to stand trial or to enter a plea, trial procedures, presentence evaluation, and post-trial procedures. A discussion of recurring issues in CMHDDS personnel's interaction with the criminal justice system addresses the liability of CMHDDS personnel, service provision, educating criminal justice personnel in CMHDDS policy and procedures, placement selections, and probation. Appended supplementary material, glossary of legal terms, 4-item bibliography.
