VOCATIONAL COUNSELING APPROACH IN TUCSON INVOLVED FIRST FINDING OUT WHAT PROFILE OF PERSONALITY FACTORS MAKE A SATISFIED AND PERSEVERING POLICEMAN.
Abstract
CANDIDATES WERE SELECTED WHO MATCH THAT PROFILE. CANDIDATES WERE COUNSELED AS TO THE APPROPRIATENESS OF THEIR CHOICE OF A CAREER. THIS WOULD MEAN THAT UNLIKELY CANDIDATES FOR POLICE WORK COULD BE STEERED INTO AREAS THAT WOULD BETTER SUIT THEIR ABILITIES. RESEARCH IN THIS COST THE TUCSON POLICE DEPARTMENT A LITTLE OVER TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS A YEAR. RESULTS OF THIS STUDY INDICATED THAT PERSONALITY FACTORS PREDICT PERMANENCE IN THE JOB OF POLICEMAN MORE THAN INTEREST PATTERNS OR INTELLIGENCE. BIBLIOGRAPHY (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
