EVALUATES RESEARCH TO DEVELOP THE HUMAN RESOURCES OF MILITARY PERSONNEL WHO STAFF CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES.
Abstract
THIS INVESTIGATION USED THE DESIGN AND EVALUATION OF THREE OPERATIONAL MODELS FOR TRAINING AS A MECHANISM FOR INCREASING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF A MILITARY ORGANIZATION. WITH CORRECTIONAL AND HUMAN RESOURCE PERSONNEL AS THE FOCAL POINT FOR STUDY, THE EXPERIMENT SUCCESSFULLY DEMONSTRATED THAT BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE RESEARCH COULD BE ADAPTED FOR THE PURPOSE OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. ALTHOUGH THE WORK WAS UNDERTAKEN IN A MILITARY SETTING, THE FINDINGS ARE TRANSFERABLE TO THE CIVILIAN SECTOR PARTICULARLY TO LOCAL, STATE, AND FEDERAL 'CORRECTIONAL' EFFORTS. FROM THE FIELD OF ORGANIZATION DEVELOPMENT, A TEAM BUILDING MODEL WAS TESTED TO DETERMINE ITS FEASIBILITY FOR IMPROVING MORALE AND ORGANIZATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS OF THE CORRECTIONAL STAFF. FINALLY, THE APPLICABILITY OF BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT TO MODIFY CONFINEE BEHAVIOR IN A CORRECTIONAL FACILITY WAS DEMONSTRATED. THE STAFF WERE TRAINED TO USE CONTINGENCY MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY AS A MEANS OF IMPROVING THE PENAL ENVIRONMENT AND TO REDUCE TENSION BETWEEN THE GUARD STAFF AND PRISONERS. IT DEMONSTRATED THAT THE UPGRADING OF STAFF SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR COULD CONTRIBUTE TO MORE JOB SATISFACTION, BETTER WORK RELATIONS, AND IMPROVED ORGANIZATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS.
