DESCRIPTIONS OF THE FACILITIES AND PROGRAMS OF INDIANA'S ADULT AND JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS ARE PRESENTED IN A MANUAL FOR JUDGES AND PROBATION OFFICERS.
Abstract
THE MANUAL DOES NOT REPRESENT AN INVESTIGATION OR EVALUATION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION'S SERVICES AND FACILITIES. RATHER, IT PROVIDES INFORMATION FOR USE BY JUDGES IN DECIDING WHETHER TO INCARCERATE A CONVICTED OFFENDER AND, WHEN THE DECISION IS TO INCARCERATE, WHERE TO RECOMMEND THAT THE OFFENDER BE SENT. THE MANUAL'S DETAILED ACCOUNTS OF FACILITIES, PROGRAMS, AND PROCEDURES PROVIDE AN OVERVIEW OF INSTITUTIONAL LIFE TO HELP JUDGES AND PROBATION OFFICERS ANSWER QUESTIONS FROM CONCERNED FAMILIES. INCLUDED ARE DESCRIPTIONS OF NINE ADULT FACILITIES, WORK-STUDY RELEASE CENTERS IN FOUR CITIES, AND FOUR INSTITUTIONS FOR JUVENILES. BASED ON OBSERVATIONS AND INTERVIEWS CARRIED OUT DURING SITE VISITS, THE DESCRIPTIONS COVER FACILITIES, INMATE CHARACTERISTICS, STAFF, DAILY ROUTINE, ORIENTATION, PRIVILEGES, DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES, CLASSIFICATION, AND INMATE SERVICES AND PROGRAMS. APPENDED MATERIALS INCLUDE A MAP SHOWING THE LOCATION OF INDIANA CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES, HIGHLIGHTS OF THE STATE'S CORRECTIONS MASTER PLAN, STATEMENTS OF POLICY GOVERNING INMATE VISITS AND CORRESPONDENCE, AND A DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION TELEPHONE DIRECTORY.
