STUDY OF THE INCIDENCE, DISPERSION, AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY IN THE INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, AREA.
Abstract
QUESTIONNAIRES WERE ADMINISTERED TO STUDENTS IN SURROUNDING COUNTY SCHOOLS. THE RESULTS INDICATED THAT 82 PERCENT OF THE STUDENTS COMPLETING THE QUESTIONNAIRE HAD ENGAGED IN AT LEAST ONE ILLEGAL ACT DURING THE PREVIOUS YEAR. IT WAS FOUND THAT MALES WERE SIGNIFICANTLY MORE INVOLVED THAN FEMALES. THE INCIDENCE OF DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR, OTHER THAN DRUG AND ALCOHOL USE, REACHES ITS HIGHEST POINT IN THE NINTH AND TENTH GRADES. IT WAS SEEN THAT MOST OF THE YOUNG PEOPLE INTERVIEWED WERE EXPOSED TO ILLEGAL ACTS PRIMARILY BY THEIR CONTEMPORARIES BUT ALSO BY ADULTS. THERE IS NO SINGLE SOURCE OF HELP CONSIDERED ACCEPTABLE BY JUVENILES OVER THE ENTIRE POTENTIAL RANGE OF THEIR PROBLEMS, BUT PARENTS SEEMED TO BE THE SOURCE MOST RELIED ON. THERE WAS CONSIDERABLE UNAWARENESS OF AGENCIES OUTSIDE THE HOME AND SCHOOL WHICH COULD PROVIDE HELP. THIS VOLUME CONTAINS DETAILS OF THE THEORETICAL DEVELOPMENT, PROCEDURES, AND TECHNICAL RESULTS. VOLUME TWO, NCJRS-009515, CONTAINS THE FINDINGS, DISCUSSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS. (AUTHOR MODIFIED)
