ONE IN A SERIES OF REPORTS BY THE PAROLE DECISION-MAKING PROJECT, THIS PAPER DISCUSSES THE VALUE OF PREDICTION TABLES ON DELINQUENCY AND DESCRIBES IMPROVEMENTS IN PREDICTION TABLE BUILDING.
Abstract
THE USE OF SUCH METHODS AS DYNAMIC CODING, SEQUENTIAL METHODS, MULTIPLE CODING AND FREE SCALES ARE SUGGESTED AS POSSIBLE MEANS OF IMPROVING PREDICTION TABLES. NEW APPROACHES TO PREDICTION ARE DISCUSSED AS WELL. THE AUTHORS STATE THAT PREDICTION METHODS ARE USEFUL, BUT MAINLY AS A RESEARCH TOOL. IN ASSISTING IN THE DECISIONMAKING PROCESSES OF PAROLE DISCRETION, THE AUTHORS AUTHORS CONTEND THAT PREDICTION IS ONE ELEMENT ONLY, AND ITS RELEVANCE INVOLVES A VALUE JUDGEMENT.
