Abstract
This book stresses that IT must be considered as an integral component of our criminal justice system due to the many technical, analytic, legal, and organizational issues related to advances in computer technology. Four main questions are addressed by the authors: 1) how has IT changed the way in which criminal behavior is monitored; 2) how has IT changed the way in which we examine patterns of criminal behavior; 3) how have criminal justice organizations adapted to the use of IT; and 4) what is the future of IT in criminal justice? In Section One, chapter 1 presents a historical overview of advances in criminal justice IT. Chapter 2 reviews the major sources of IT support for criminal justice agencies. In Section Two, chapter 3 examines how the Internet has changed the ways criminal justice agencies manage information. Chapter 4 focuses on how widespread access to the Internet has transformed criminal activities. In Section Three, chapter 5 looks at the way in which IT advancements have changed the way our Nation handles crime reporting. Chapter 6 explores the contribution of IT on crime analysis capabilities. Chapter 7 focuses on crime mapping in criminal justice agencies.
