This report presents data about inmate mortality in New York Department of Correctional Services facilities during the years 1997 through 2000.
Abstract
According to the data presented here, 796 inmate deaths occurred during 1997 through 2000. Causes of death are presented, including 140 AIDS-related illnesses, 10 homicides, 54 suicides, and 35 accidents or other causes. AIDS-related deaths declined during the 4 year period from 8.6 deaths per 10,000 inmates in 1997 to 1.4 in the year 2000. In fact, the rate of inmate deaths overall decreased in the period 1997 through 2000. Most deaths among inmates occurred in the age group of 40 years and older, with white males experiencing the highest inmate mortality rate. Data is also offered about inmate death by commitment offense and region of commitment. Data is offered in both narrative form and in tables
