DESCRIPTIONS OF INMATE VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMS CURRENTLY BEING IMPLEMENTED IN PRISONS THROUGHOUT THE NATION.
Abstract
THE INFORMATION WAS EXTRACTED FROM DATA GATHERED BY THE FIRST NATIONAL PRISON OCCUPATIONAL EDUCATION PROJECT. THE PROJECT AIMED AT COLLECTING USABLE AND DETAILED INFORMATION ON HOW VARIOUS INMATE PROGRAMS ARE IMPLEMENTED, FINANCED AND OPERATED, IT WAS FOUND THAT INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS MAY BE GROUPED INTO THREE CATEGORIES - CLASSROOM AND SHOP PROGRAMS WHICH INCORPORATE TRADITIONAL LECTURING PROCEDURES AND SHOP EXPERIENCE IN THE MANIPULATION OF TOOLS, TRAINING RELEASE WHICH PROVIDES WORK-RELATED EDUCATION OUTSIDE THE PRISON, AND PROGRAMMED INSTRUCTION WHICH ALLOWS A STUDENT TO WORK AT HIS OWN PACE AND ENTER THE PROGRAM AT MORE FREQUENT INTERVALS. COMMENTS ARE MADE ON POSSIBLE FUNDING SOURCES, SUCH AS LEAA, MAN DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING ACT (MDTA), AND STATE DEPARTMENTS OF VOCATIONAL TRAINING, AND ON THE SELECTION OF STUDENTS AND PROGRAMS IN RELATION TO THE JOB MARKET. ADMINISTRATION AND STAFF QUALITY ARE CITED AS TWO FACTORS CRUCIAL TO THE SUCCESS OF A VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM. THE NEED TO SEEK SUPPORTIVE SERVICES FROM OUTSIDE AGENCIES IS ALSO DISCUSSED.
